The Virginia Tech Hokies are ready to kick off the season today against the William & Mary Tribe and while this on paper should be an easy game, this could be a little closer than expected. The Tribe have played tough against top FBS competition in the past and Frank Beamer will make sure to prepare his team well for this game.

Throughout the season, the staff of Fighting Gobbler will make their predictions for every game and give you a few different opinions on how we think the game will go. With that said, let’s get to the predictions.

Joe Vitulli

In a game in which the Hokies should win by multiple touchdowns, the offense will start out slowly and the defense yield an early first quarter score.  Going into the half, VT will be winning but only by a 10-7 score.

The third quarter is where the magic happens, however, as new starter Michael Brewer throws his first TD pass of the season on the first drive of the second half and the defense picks up a score as well.  After a stunning third quarter, the Hokies win a game that was closer than the final score will indicate.  Hokies 35 Tribe 10.

The Hokies open the season against a fellow Commonwealth of Virginia team in the William and Mary Tribe.  Hokie fans are all too familiar with how the Hokies can make these games nail bitters.  However, Hokie fans, this will not be one of those games.  The offense may struggle at times but they will make a strive forward with Michael Brewer at the helm.

The defense will be the real story of the game as their speed and tenacity will overwhelm an inexperienced Tribe quarterback.  Look for turnovers to be key as the defense will turn at least one into points.  The Hokies roll 31-7, bring on the Buckeyes!!!

Lane Stadium kicks off its 50th season of college football with a rematch of the first game played in it between the Virginia Tech Hokies and William & Mary Tribe. While the Tribe should not be that close on paper, they will be able to cause some issues early on.

However, a lot of these Hokies will want to prove themselves especially on offense where Michael Brewer will step up in his first game for the Hokies. William & Mary’s inexperience at quarterback will cause big problems for them as the Hokies’ secondary will be absolutely dominant in this game. Virginia Tech will get the job done fairly comfortably as the Hokies will win 42-6 over the Tribe
