Virginia Tech defeated Eastern Carolina by a score of 15-1o. The main story of today’s game was the dominant performance the defense turned in. The defense held ECU’s explosive offense to just 10 points, and showed just why they are one of the best in the country. The win gives the Hokies their second straight, and boost their record to 2-1. The offense had a much better showing, but it was not a perfect day for Virginia Tech to say the least.

Kicker Cody Journell missed two field goals, and an extra point. This was certainly disappointing to see as it cost the Hokies much needed points. Missed field goals are something that should not be happening at the college level, and fans are not happy with the kicker. The next area where Virginia Tech struggled was the running game. The running backs were not able to repeat their performance from last week, and Trey Edmunds only rushed for 42 yards. Edmunds did not get any help from his peers as they only rushed for 11 yards combined.

Quarterback Logan Thomas played just as he has all season. His completion percent was not pretty since he only completed 25 of 43 passes. While he went on to throw an interception, he also threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns. The yards and touchdown passes look good on paper, but only completing 25 of 43 passes is not good. Thomas has been incredibly inconsistent so far this season, and is very difficult to figure out. Hopefully, he will only continue to improve, and make wiser decisions moving forward.

The Virginia Tech defense has been so much fun to watch this year, and today’s performance brought plenty of entertainment. The Hokies defense held the Pirates to only 10 points, and 204 total yards. The team recorded 7 sacks and 3 interceptions on the day. Also, the Hokies held ECU to a 3-11 third down rate which is very impressive. Virginia Tech’s defense is one of the best in the country and is making plenty of noise. They are becoming a feared unit, and opposing teams can definitely back that up.

The Hokies got a big win this afternoon, and are in good shape. They need to be much more consistent on offense and everyone needs to play well each week. Logan Thomas and Trey Edmunds are going to play major roles in the offense this season. They have had their moments, but really need to bring it each week. The defense has been amazing for VT and they will only look to get better as the season goes on. The win didn’t come easy today, but Hokies fans are glad that the team is above .500. This week Virginia Tech will prepare for Marshall, who is currently 2-0.
