With the first two games of the season in the books, the Virginia Tech Hokies record stands at 1-1. 1-1 is a point where most fans figured they would be at this point, considering how predictable their match-ups have been. The player who is most important to Virginia Tech’s success is quarterback Logan Thomas. Thomas’ play usually has a major effect on how the outcome of the game as he is so involved with the offense. The first few outings have been sub par for Thomas, and now is a great time to evaluate his play.

Game 1 vs. Alabama

Virginia Tech’s first contest of the year came against Alabama and Logan Thomas was dreadful to say the least. Before we evaluate his play, here are the stats from the game. Thomas complied only 5 passes out of 26 attempts for 59 yards. That adds up to Thomas comepletting %19.2 of his passes thrown against Alabama, and he also had a QB rating 30.6. Logan Thomas then went on to toss an interception, and only gain 2 yards on the ground on 5 attempts. Clearly it was not Thomas’ day as the stats show. His wide-receivers did not help by going on to drop multiple passes. It was a miserable game for the Hokies offense, and fans bashed Thomas for his play.

Game 2 vs. Western Carolina

The second game of the year for Logan Thomas came against Western Carolina. Thomas turned around his play, and had a much better performance. In the win, he completed 17 of 31 passes for 200 yards. His QB rating improved to 106.8 and he tossed a touchdown pass. However, Thomas threw another 2 interceptions. While he definitely played better against a much weaker opponent, fans are still questioning if he improved.

The numbers certainly got better for Logan Thomas but did he actually play better? The answer to that question is somewhat. Western Carolina was not a tough match-up, and Thomas still threw two interceptions. Sure, he got the team the win, but he needs to play much better for when VT plays better teams. Fans have been very critical of how he has been playing so far this season, and how Thomas plays is very important if the Hokies want to win more games. The win against WC is a step, but Logan Thomas has the potential to be a great college football quarterback. Thomas will look to continue to improve his play this Saturday against ECU.
