Following Virginia Tech's 55-17 win over Wake Forest Thanksgiving Weekend in Charlottesville that moved the Hokies to 6-6 and made them bowl-eligible, tight end Dae'Quan Wright announced that he was entering the transfer portal.

Unlike some of his other teammates who entered the transfer portal, he decided to not stay with the team for the Military Bowl against Tulane in Annapolis, Maryland. After being in the portal for more than a month, the Perry, Georgia native committed in the transfer portal Sunday.

Dae'Quan Wright commits to Mississippi

Sunday, Wright announced on his Instagram page that he has committed to Mississippi in the SEC and head coach Lane Kiffin.

Wright, who was a sophomore last season at Virginia Tech, had 28 receptions for 366 yards, averaging 13.1 yards a catch. His two best games for the Hokies in 2023 were when he had three receptions for 64 yards at Virginia and four catches for 58 yards at Boston College, Virginia Tech's only two road wins of the season. He saw more reps this season after Nick Gallo was lost at the end of camp to an injury and he missed the entire season. He announced a couple of weeks ago that he's returning for his final season in 2024.

Against Tulane, Harrison Saint Germain and Benji Gosnell each had a touchdown reception from the tight end position in place of Wright and they gained valuable snaps for the future. With Gallo returning, the Hokies did not fill Wright's departure in the transfer portal, instead getting the commitment from Gallo for next season.

Virginia Tech also has wide receivers Ali Jennings, Da'Quan Felton, Stephen Gosnell, and Jaylin Lane coming back along with quarterback Kyron Drones and running back Bhayshul Tuten. We wish Wright nothing but the best of luck in the SEC at Mississippi.
