Virginia Tech's offensive line came to play

It's amazing what a healthy offensive line can do for a team. The Hokies' offensive line has been in shambles for most of the season with injuries and having to rebuild on the fly, but against Cal, they had their best game of the season, and the bye came at the right time, allowing them to get healthy and be as full-strength as possible.

Quarterback Kyron Drones was sacked three times, but those were on him for his inability to feel pocket pressure. The running game was tremendous, and a lot of that had to do with the guys in the trenches. Drones threw for three touchdown passes, and the two in the second half were because of the protection to let the receivers run their routes. A great night for the OL.

Cal had no answers for Virginia Tech's running game

In the second half, Virginia Tech did a nice job of calling plays, and they stuck with what worked, pounding the rock against a defense that still hasn't stopped it. It seemed like the Hokies were running the same plays over and over, and the Golden Bears couldn't figure things out.

Marcellous Hawkins rushed for 167 yards on 21 carries, and Drones also had 21 carries for 137 yards. All in all, Virginia Tech rushed for 357 yards with Drones scoring both touchdowns on the ground. Terion Stewart had a workman-like 48 yards on 14 carries, but some of those carries were big ones at the time.
