Virginia Tech rising redshirt-junior wide receiver C.J. Carroll earned a scholarship for the remainder of his collegiate career

It has been a week of excitement around the Virginia Tech football program, with big names from around the state and beyond committing to the Hokies in one of the best signing classes in school history.

National Signing Day on Wednesday brought the Hokies a consensus top 25 recruiting class for 2017, in a day that was all about those signing their scholarship papers for their education and athletic careers over the next three to four years.

While all of this was happening this week, there was quietly a feel-good story developing in the background regarding a current Hokie entering his fourth year with the program. On Thursday afternoon, coach Justin Fuente and the Virginia Tech football program announced that rising redshirt-junior wide receiver C.J. Carroll would be put on scholarship.

The 5’7″ 170 lbs. Carroll walked-on with the Hokies football program in 2014 following his graduation from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Maryland, where he was teammates with Kendall Fuller.

He spent that year redshirting, but has developed into a reliable slot receiver and special teams player for Virginia Tech over the last couple of seasons, making the most of every opportunity that he has received since making the team.

Carroll just finished his most productive season as a member of the program, capping off 2016-17 with 18 receptions for 258 yards, nine carries for 46 yards, and 11 punt returns for 98 yards. The most memorable play of the year for Carroll was unequivocally the 62-yard reception in the third quarter against Notre Dame, where he nearly took a middle screen to the house.

That play was a major factor in the Hokies’ comeback efforts in the ballgame, as the offense scored a couple of plays later to start the second half strong which ultimately led to a 34-31 road win.

Carroll enters the 2017-18 season with two years of scholarship eligibility remaining, and is expected to be a major cog as a slot receiver in the offense moving forward for Justin Fuente and the Hokies.
