The Hokies’ big game is almost here so with that in mind, we recently got the chance to talk with the staff of The Buckeye Battle Cry to help give us a persepctive on the Buckeyes. With that said, here is our Q&A with the staff of the Buckeye Battle Cry as we prepare for the big game against Ohio State.

Q: How big has the impact of Urban Meyer been beyond the impressive win-loss record?

A: His major impact has been reflective in the talent level that we have seen in his recruiting classes. That would have to be first and foremost. Ohio State always gets great talent, now they’re getting talent that was typically reserved for the folks in the south.

I’ve also noticed a general feeling of “when not if” among the fanbase as it pertains to finally ending this incredible run the SEC has been on. Florida State got it started last year, hopefully under Meyer’s guidance Ohio State will join the party.

The only negative, for lack of better term, that I can find in Meyer’s arrival is that we still aren’t seeing the team play like his Florida teams did. The teams at Florida were fun to watch (despite the beating they gave the Buckeyes in the national title game we try to forget) because they flew around and hit people on defense and scored seemingly at will on offense.

They were at the top of the rankings and still playing seemingly with a chip on their shoulder. All the while, and this was most important, they appeared to really be enjoying themselves without taking their “swagger” over the top. We haven’t seen this yet, instead it’s been an feeling of refined excitement.

This could be attributed to him not having “his” guys fully entrenched in the program. This year sees his third recruiting class get added into the mix leaving only seniors as the remaining Tressel recruits and they’re making a huge impact on the two deep as you would expect. We’ll see how it plays out.
