The starting quarterback battle for the Virginia Tech Hokies has been a very tough one with every quarterback on scholarship getting a chance, equal or not, to earn the starting job. The quarterback competition has seen Travon McMillan change positions after falling out of the hunt while freshmen Andrew Ford and Chris Durkin never really gained much momentum.
Brenden Motley seemed likely to be a big threat after ending the spring at the top. However, a back injury cost him his chance and made it a two-player battle between Michael Brewer and Mark Leal.
This was a close battle but today’s announcement about the winner of this battle was not a big surprise.
Michael Brewer has beat out Mark Leal and will be the Hokies’ starting quarterback this fall. Brewer transferred to Virginia Tech from Texas Tech and has to be happy about earning his first career collegiate start. Leal will be ready to take the job back if Brewer struggles though.
Brewer came to Virginia Tech to win the starting quarterback job and that is exactly what he has done. Brewer seemed ready to be the next starting quarterback for Texas Tech last season before injuries cost him the job. However, Brewer has taken advantage of this oopportunity.
When Brewer has touched the field, he has proven to be a quality quarterback as he had a lot of success in the very limited number of passes he threw for the Red Raiders. Now, Brewer will look to help turn around the Virginia Tech offense and win the ACC Coastal.
Michael Brewer now has the opportunity he has been waiting for and will look to take advantage of it.
