Entering this spring, a lot of the focus at the running back position was on the recovery of Trey Edmunds and Shai McKenzie who had just enrolled early this spring. Marshawn Williams did not enter the spring with much attention as Williams was not seen as a guy that could get much playing time this fall. Williams entered the spring as an under-the-radar player but Williams ended the spring as someone that people wondered if he could gain some playing time this fall.
This past spring, Marshawn Williams proved that he could be one of those tough, physical runners that was willing to run in between the tackles to gain yards. Williams also showed some strength to make some power runs which started to make fans and analysts wonder if he could be a power back in the red zone on some plays this fall.
Marshawn Williams seemed ready to continue to make a surge this summer in his pursuit of playing time but he might just have a hard time avoiding a redshirt after what Frank Beamer said about Williams yesterday.
Frank Beamer a little less bullish on #Hokies RB Marshawn Williams than this spring. Said his weight went up too much between spring & now.

This is now a major red flag for Marshawn Williams as any time someone has his weight go up like this is going to scare a lot of people. This sounds like a lack of discipline by the player to make sure his weight didn’t get up while you also have to wonder about his work ethic if Williams wasn’t maybe burning off some of those calories enough in the gym.
Williams will have to get his weight under control and has put himself behind the eight ball entering this fall. With the load of talent that the Hokies have at running back, it will be up to Williams to step up and prove that he should get some playing time. We are about to learn a lot about Marshawn Williams and hopefully, he will get his weight under control and not have this issue again.
