2013-2014 Virginia Tech Basketball Recap: Joey Van Zegeren’s Sophomore Improvement


Joey Van Zegeren entered the season battling to get a starting spot for the Hokies and by the end of the season, Van Zegeren showed a lot of potential and became one of the most underrated players in the ACC. Joey Van Zegeren was a consistent threat on the defensive side of the basketball while his offensive game showed a lot of improvement over the course of the season. Joey Van Zegeren entered the season as somewhat of an unknown but is now a major part of the future.

Joey Van Zegeren played only limited minutes against big time opponents early on the season with only 9 minutes against West Virginia, 11 minutes against Michigan State, and 13 minutes against Seton Hall. However, Van Zegeren finally showed that he could be a really good player in Virginia Tech’s first win over Miami in overtime with 8 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Joey Van Zegeren also averaged almost 2 blocks per game and proved himself as a defensive force that pushed his way into the starting lineup.

Joey Van Zegeren started out ACC play with some struggles on the offensive end but Van Zegeren was solid on the defensive end with some elite performances. Van Zegeren put up 5 blocks against Boston College while having 6 blocks at Notre Dame 8 days later. Van Zegeren still was solid defensively in the post even in games when he didn’t have any blocks but his offensive game struggled with only 3 outputs of 10+ points from the beginning of the season till the end of January.

Joey Van Zegeren’s offensive games improved significantly with 10+ points in four games from the beginning of February till the end of the season. Van Zegeren’s peak offensive performance came against Georgia Tech when Van Zegeren had 21 points and made 9 of 17 field goals. Joey Van Zegeren did still have some offensive struggles especially due to poor free throw shooting but Van Zegeren has shown a lot of potential and is becoming a well-rounded big man that will be a major part of the future for the Hokies.
