There was a lot of good news over the last 24 hours and a lot of momentum surrounding the Virginia Tech Hokies due to the hiring of Buzz Williams as the new head coach. The Hokies’ new head coach met with the players today to try to get to know and see who would be sticking around and who might just transfer. Of course, there were some concerns that someone might transfer but now one talented freshman has made the decision to leave Virginia Tech.
Mark Berman of the Roanoke Times reported that Trevor Thompson had decided to transfer before Thompson’s father confirmed that via text.

This is a big loss for the Hokies as Thompson started during most of the ACC games after claiming a starting spot in early January. Thompson was a very athletic power forward that showed his potential to become a big time double-double threat for the Hokies. Thompson showed that while he isn’t a guy that will make threes, he is a guy that can make some mid-range jumpers or get easy layups. Thompson also had been a solid shot blocker and that should only get better over the next few seasons. Thompson could have been a big time player at Virginia Tech and it is unfortunate that Thompson is leaving. Hopefully, Thompson will be the only player to transfer from Virginia Tech.
