Buzz Williams has been hired as the next Virginia Tech Men’s Basketball Head Coach

Earlier today, John Feinstein said on DC Radio that AD Whit Babcock and the Virginia Tech Hokies were pushing hard after Marquette head coach Buzz Williams. This seemed like ust a rumor that really didn’t have much to it as it didn’t seem like Williams would actually leave Marquette for Virginia Tech. Buzz Williams and Marquette had a down year but Williams has made the NCAA Tournament in the first five years he was the Golden Eagles head coach including an Elite Eight run last season.

Those rumors are now statements of fact as Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports broke the news that Buzz Williams is going to be the next head coach at Virginia Tech.

This is a huge hiring for Virginia Tech as the Hokies weren’t expected to get this big of a name and Williams is a big time hire. Williams maintained what Tom Crean built at Marquette and saw the Golden Eagles become more consistent outside of this past season. Williams knows how to build quality teams and this is the type of hire that will also excite the fan base. Whit Babcock has made an excellent decision in going after Williams and this is a great day for Virginia Tech basketball.
