Bucky Hodges came to Virginia Tech as a highly-rated quarterback prospect that reminded many people of Logan Thomas due to the fact that he had great size at 6’6” just like Thomas. Also, Hodges had great mobility just like a tight end which is the same position that Logan Thomas almost moved to before becoming the Hokies’ starting quarterback and having a fairly successful career. However, Hodges didn’t have the same early success as Thomas did and now the Hokies will get to see Bucky Hodges at a position that could make him a big time playmaker.
Bucky Hodges is moving to tight end and this is a big move for a guy who at one time seemed like the quarterback of the future though that seemed less likely as the season went on. Hodges brings ideal size to the position which could make him a weapon that can make a strong group of receivers for the Hokies even stronger. Not many tight ends are used in the passing game at the collegiate level in the sama way they are used in the NFL but there are a few exceptions including former Texas Tech TE Jace Amaro.
However, Bucky Hodges is a raw talent at tight end and Virginia Tech fans will have to be patient as there is a chance that Hodges will never work out at tight end. However, the Hokies have Bryan Stinespring who showed his ability to be a quality tight end coach after the development of Kalvin Cline this past season. Hodges has a huge ceiling and he has the combination of speed, size, and strength that makes him look like a big time prospect. Hodges could become a big time playmaker this season but realistically, Hodges will need a year to make the full switch and become an offensive weapon for the Hokies. However, that wait could be quite rewarding though as Kalvin Cline proved, that wait could definitely be a lot shorter.
