Once again, we got in touch with Virginia Tech beat writer Mike Barber. Mike is a beat writer for the Richmond TImes-Dispatch. We wanted to get an expert opinion on some of the story lines that have taken place recently. Also, we picked Mike’s brain about Saturday’s game against North Carolina. Enjoy.
Q: Can Logan Thomas produce at a high level once again?
A: Tech’s offense has shifted to a pass-first attack, which is hard to fathom after the opener. Logan has thrown the ball better, his receivers have caught it much better. He comes into this game really beat up but UNC has had major issues defensively so I think he can have a big game.
Q: What does the run game have to do to get going?
A: Again, Tech’s game plan has shifted to focus on the pass with opposing defenses loading up against the run. UNC has been terrible against the run this season so Saturday could be a chance for the Hokies to mix things up a bit more. Edmunds showed what he can do against Alabama and Marshall, but if defenses dare the Hokies to throw it, they will.
Q: What are your thoughts on Antone Exum returning, and where does Brendan Facyson fit in now?
A: Brandon Facyson will start at cornerback on Saturday. Exum will get very limited playing time and the chance to show how recovered he really is. Until he proves he can be an every-play corner, I don’t expect to see anything much changing with Facyson’s role.
Q: What are the keys to a Hokie’s win, and predication of the game against North Carolina?
A: Defensively, Tech needs to protect the edge and not give up the big plays it did last year. Offensively, this should be a good chance for the Hokie to regain some confidence in their ground game. I’d expect Tech to win 24-13, or something in that range.
We want to thank Mike for taking time out of his day to give us his analysis. He has outstanding work and here is more info where you can get more updates from Mike!
