Freshman guard Malik Mueller has been ruled out for the upcoming season. Why he is being ruled ineligible has not been identified, and head coach James Johnson could not go into detail. Muller was looking to make an impact this season, and was expected to compete for playing time.

The 6’3′ guard will have to sit out this season, but will look to make a difference in the future. Mueller will still be on a scholarship and be able to practice with the Hokies. Also, he will still have four years of eligibility left as well. Hopefully things get straightened out for the young man and we are able to see him on the court next season for Virginia Tech.

It is disappointing and unfortunate the NCAA would consider the high school degree that qualifies you to study at any German, most European as well as American Universities to be insufficient academic prove to declare a player eligible to compete in college basketball. Especially if she/he successfully passed additional testing foreign students go through to prove their academic fitness. There are several examples of foreign players who have been cleared for college sports in the U.S. who have had the same academic qualification.

Aside from other aspects, it is discouraging to see that there seems to be an inconsistency when it comes to declaring players academically fit or not. – However, this experience will not remain just a disappointment since the players, coaches, the athletic department´s management, members of staff and supporters at VT have stood together through this decision and manifested what should never get lost in the world of competitive sports.

This team already won something no one can take from them and what some will never have. And all even before the season started!

    Go Hokies!
